Asking Questions

When was the last time someone asked you an honest, open question, one that invited you to reflect more deeply on your own life? A question asked by a person who did not want to advise you or “fix you,” but “hear you into speech,” into deeper and deeper speech?

Rosie is curious. I like that in a friend, and tell her how much I appreciate honest, open questions. Her questions always invite me to bring forth more parts of my story.

12-15-00: So what do you do all day? Do you live alone?

6-18-01: Tell me more about this cabin you share, is it fixed up already? I’d love to live in a cabin in the woods, away from city life and smog.

After our first visit on June 29, 2001: So my friend, what did you think of me?

9-7-01: What’s worse, running into a berry-bear or a mountain lion? Which one would you run from first? You be careful out in the woods there, friend.

9-23-01: Like your son, I’m also Bi-Polar, did I ever tell you? I take medication for it. How is he doing now?

12-13-01: So how’s your Christmas shopping coming along, almost done?

Rosie’s concern for her own well-being is well-balanced with her concern for me. I see this as a sign that she is accepting God’s invitation to be both true to herself and deeply aware of others, including this friend outside.

7-22-01: So, how’s your home, is it a nice lil home?

9-11-02: Today is 9/11, sad day, huh? You could even feel it in here on d.row, its been really quiet. What are you doing today?

4-19-02: So why did your son change his name to Ray? How is your son, is he still in the drug rehab home? I truly hope he’s doing well. I think of him often and I don’t even know him, but for some reason I feel his pain.

4-22-02: The story “First Kiss” you sent me, did you write it?

5-25-02: Hello my friend, how are you? I’ve been thinking about you a lot, wondering how you been feeling since your separation from your husband?

7-22-00: Judith, I didn’t know you were a Revron. It said Rev. Judith Favor on the envelope. Cause I didn’t know, friend. Are you?

3-9-03: Where was the march you were in? Was there a lot of people marching with you?

3-26-03: So what new things are you up to? I know you’re always up to something. That’s great how you spread your love everywhere. Write soon, don’t take forever cause I always worry in my mind I feel that you’re dumping me.

4-22-03: So the soap rose broke, huh? I’m sorry it broke in the mail, wish I could send you a new one but the new person that’s handling arts & crafts, she doesn’t allow that.
